Cane crop to increase in three years

Update: 10.40am FIJI will have to increase its cane crop by almost 1.3
million tonnes in three years time.
The comment was made by interim Finance and Sugar Industry Minister,
Mahendra Chaudhry, who said the various facets of the industry need to
be evaluated to resurrect it in a competent manner.
''The Sugar Research Institute is active and will educate farmers on
achieving higher farm yield and high sugar content in cane,'' Mr
Chaudhry said.
He confirmed that the Independent Sugar Research Institute established
last year, is recruiting extension officers and farm advisors to improve
farm services which will lead to increased cane crop.
The work on upgrading of mills is continuing.
''We recently sent a team of officials to India to discuss and finalize
the agreement that we have in India in relation to the sugar industry
restructure, particularly the upgrading of mills as we hope to have the
upgrades done by the end of 2008 to increase its capacity,'' Mr Chaudhry
said.
''At the same time we are concentrating on the field operations because
we have to increase cane crop by almost 1.3 million tonnes in 3 years
time.''
